Shortening of Time
How shortening of time works in Australia, when it may be available, and what to know before applying.
Sometimes couples ask if the one-month notice period can be shortened.
Sometimes it can, but only in limited circumstances and only if a prescribed authority approves it.
The First Rule
Your NOIM must be given first.
We cannot even talk sensibly about a shortening of time until the NOIM has been prepared and lodged.
What We Cannot Do
We cannot:
- approve the shortening
- guarantee an outcome
- influence the decision
- override a refusal
The Official Categories
The regulations set out five broad categories:
- employment-related or other travel commitments
- wedding or celebration arrangements
- medical reasons
- legal proceedings
- error in giving notice
The fact that a category exists does not mean an approval is automatic. Evidence matters.
How the Process Usually Works
- Book with us and prepare your NOIM.
- Lodge the NOIM with the supporting paperwork.
- Apply to a prescribed authority with your evidence.
- Wait for their decision.
The Practical Advice
If speed matters, the best first move is still to get the NOIM in as early as possible.
That is why the simplest path is:
- Get Married
- prepare your NOIM
- ask about shortening only if you genuinely need it
