If you were married in Western Australia and need the official marriage certificate, you will usually order it from WA Births, Deaths and Marriages after the marriage has been registered.

The Basic Process

  1. You get married.
  2. We lodge the marriage paperwork after the ceremony.
  3. WA BDM registers the marriage.
  4. You order the official certificate from WA BDM.

Important Timing

Celebrants must lodge the official paperwork within 14 days after the marriage.

After that, WA BDM still needs time to register the marriage before the official certificate can be ordered.

What the Official Certificate Is For

People commonly need it for:

  • changing a surname
  • passports
  • visa applications
  • formal proof of marriage

Good to Know
