Before we can complete your marriage, we need to see the right identity documents.

Most People Need One of These

Usually you will need either:

  • a current passport, or
  • a birth certificate or official extract plus photo ID

Photo ID

If you are using a birth certificate or official extract, bring current photo ID as well, such as:

  • driver licence
  • proof of age card
  • passport
  • another government-issued photo ID

If Your Name Has Changed

If your current legal name is different from your birth document, you will also need evidence of the name change, such as:

  • change of name certificate
  • marriage certificate from an earlier marriage
  • other lawful evidence of the change

If You Have Been Married Before

You will also need:

  • a divorce order, or
  • a death certificate for your former spouse

Documents in Another Language

If your documents are not in English, you will usually need:

  • the original document, and
  • a translation from a suitable translator

Copies and Originals

You can often send scanned copies first so we can check the paperwork, but we still need to see the originals before the marriage goes ahead.

Best Way to Keep Things Easy

Have all your documents ready before you send the NOIM. That makes it much easier for us to check the paperwork and confirm your appointment.
